I've been teaching C# to my kids for the last few months, and today we went over binary numbers. Just to give them a visual representation of how binary counted, I put together a five mintue swf. Now -- having totured myself for the last few years getting comfortable with those uptight airtight code structures, it was totally refreshing to get back to the raw perfection of a quick and dirty peice of swf. The whole thing boiled down to one short line of code (ok, another that incremented and a few stops), everything else just clicked like a watch. Five freakin minutes, 3k, and I've even reused it (that's the holy grail of software, right?) twice since then.

Sometimes you get so numb from all the day to day drugery you forget the 'holy shit' concepts Flash is based on.

A binary counter in one line of code and a 3K file for teaching kids about binary!? That's pretty dope. I really liked Free's page and am quite impressed by your kids' programming skills at such a young age.

And you're teaching them C#! I only hope that when I've mine I'd do half as good a job as you are.

    Jim ;)

It's easy - just marry up like I did : ). Her family has some serious brains...

That site of theirs is actually from a few years back (they are 11 now) - they did learn a fair bit of programming in flash back then though. I think it is the perfect environment to begin in -- visual and forgiving .

Now it is all 3DMax, but they are miles ahead of me there I'm afraid. The C# is mostly to let them know that there are still a few things I know that they don't - my last chance to use the voice of authority before they are teenagers ; ).

Hey Robin, I found just the toy your kids need to show off to their friend their brand new binary knowledge :).

In fact I'm thinking of getting one for myself :D

Man, 11 and learning C# and base 2 arithmetic, wasn't I just a stupid undisciplined brat at that age????

hi.. sir you're inspiring..i've read about your OOP tutorial and it's quite very helpful for a computer science student like me..
i wish i could have had such experience when i was young..
is it possible if you could lend a sample of that binary simulation fla? or even just the code? Thanks very much and God bless your family =) beeckline@yahoo.com
